New Microsoft Operating System

Author

Message

OMANBA

Bill Gates and his team have done it again. The WINDOWS VISTA operating system is here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/default.mspx
The word on the street is that its 3D funtionality is phenomenal and unlike its predecessors it allows you to retrieve lost work. Well, we will see about that. I intend to play it cool till it takes off in a big way, so i can be in on all the troubleshoots before i load it on my PC.

The cost of changing over

As with all new gizmos in the IT world, there is the big issue of having to buy a new PC or upgrading your existing one before one can use this new Operating System and then there is the small matter(eeek!) of cost. At the moment this will knock you back a few bucks.
Good thing is that it will be compartible with other window programmes thus making transfer of your back-up programming disks less of a nightmare.

Well so Vista is here, but where is the catch? What manner of computational problems can we expect and is Bill Gates and Company hoping to make the older O.S versions a thing of the past. Food for thought.
Seems to be a war of the programmers on at the moment. Everybody seems to be falling over themselves to bring out this and that, and all the gaming buffs around the world are in 7th heaven.
But such is the competitive world we live in today.

THE CRINGE FACTOR! WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT GOD MADE THREE WORLDS AND THAT I COME FROM THE THIRD WORLD. THE ISSUE OF RACE IS GEOGRAPHICAL AND NOT A STATUS SYMBOL AND NEITHER IS MY SKIN BLACK NOR YOURS WHITE.

m$ vista? no thanks

3d functionality? Well, any mac user will tell you this has been available in osx, now 5 years in existence, at a guess.
m$ windoze 95 was basically copied from macs, again 5 years late?
And don't get me started on talking about viruses, spyware, malware etc etc. When was the last time you heard of a virus on mac, unix or beos?

So, my advice is this: if you don't know (or wish to know) anything about how computers work, only to use them, get a mac.

Otherwise 'innovate' your mind and make the switch to linux.

OMANBA

Troubleshooting already

Mr R, thanks for enlightening us. I presume from your robust stance on the issue you have actually used the new Vista O.S? In which case we will be happy to hear your experience with it.
If however you haven't done so, how come you are so quick to condemn it?

Re:m$ vista? no thanks

the 3d look is just the new theme (glass i think). mac got the aqua theme it's nothing new. moreover, if you don't have the hardware to run vista, it'll graciously downgrade to a strip down version without all the eye candy. i'm yet to see it in action so this is all based on what i've heard/read.
as far as security goes, vista is a major upgrade over windows xp (so i have heard). hardware requirement alone makes vista non-attractive to most users but it's sure worth the upgrade if you can afford it :)

there are viruses out there for linux and mac. it's just that they're not as prevalent and not as easy to spread as they're on windows. vista promises to change this but we'll have to wait and see.
windows just like linux, mac or any other operating system have their weaknesses and strengths. it's up to the user to choose what's best for them.

r

pay for windoze? Are you crazy?

In answer to your question, yes I've seen vista; nothing to inspire a purchase.

Why moan about the cost of ugrade changing, when a perfectly valid, free, alternative exists right now?

All my pc needs can be satisfied via linux. If REALLY necessary , then a mac. From a design and usability perspective, I've found most models since the mac plus to be superb.

What I can't understand in this original post, why on earth provide free publicity for m$ and tell readers in this post about vista? What's the point?

Certainly, it's got nothing to do with physical sciences.

Personally, I'd rather read about some innovative ideas within the sector of physical sciences. Fellow readers: where is the innovation?

OMANBA

There is always one

I have ever said to you before Mr R. That presentation in a nice manner is not your forte. SO WORK ON IT. Every topic is a battleground for you why? Keep your hair and your moustache on!

So you wont pay for Windows...who gives a toss about your ricketty Mac anyway. And what is your problem? If i want to discuss the Window Vista System with fellow forumers i darn well will, so eat your heart out! You profess to know it all but you know nothing! You only saw the Vista by your own admission now that is different from using it. Have you used it Sir?

And all this nonsense about innovation that has currently become your fodder that you chew on...who gives a toss! When was the last time you even initiated a topic on here? This is very rich coming from you. Read what Thinfox wrote, it will burst your bubble.

Such hypocrisy, you give the hype on how linux etc is, but when i want to engage in discussing windows you accuse me of providing free publicity? Cheek! If you detest the topic so much why are you yammering away? Hehehehe...man you give me the giggles.

OMANBA

Its better

Thinfox, from what has been said i think it has a lot of potential. I particularly like the TV and Movie feature (less sqabbling in my house over the TV remote control) and although this is nothing new in computer circles, it will be a good experience for Windows users; what with the aero and 3D features. The tab browsing feature is also a hit with me; no more stacking of different windows and clicking off and on between them.
Apparently the player attached to it has a direct link to MTV, a merger which will make music and download buffs very happy but as always note US users only. Not fair.

I still think it takes a bit of whack out of the wallet and purse though. Especially if you got a PC at home and a laptop, not to mention th accessories like TV/VIDEO CARDS and REMOTE. And the fact that it comes in four seperate versions is a sly way of marketing. Basically the higher you go the better your features and most probably the need for more byte.
As with all new technology, i can see a lot of people and companies getting into a frenzy and going for it, but this will be good because it will cause a fall in prices when the novelty wears off. And no prizes for guessing where all the discarded old computers will end up.

THE CRINGE FACTOR! WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT GOD MADE THREE WORLDS AND THAT I COME FROM THE THIRD WORLD. THE ISSUE OF RACE IS GEOGRAPHICAL AND NOT A STATUS SYMBOL AND NEITHER IS MY SKIN BLACK NOR YOURS WHITE.

r

hysterical

You are correct, thinfox makes absolutely useful points about other operating systems.

It is only in your later post that I now understand that a particular feature of windoze (tv remote control?) is of specific interest. Of course, it is your prerogative to choose what you write: I'm surprised you deny that equal prerogative to raise a question...

Just for the record, who told you I was using a mac? ;)

I only viewed vista briefly in a business environment, not leisure.

I raise (in my humble opinion) a legitimate question about the post and all we read is a torrent...whatever, as an american would say. :)

One note about tabbed browsing: this feature was available in my favourite browser, firefox, since at least 2003 (yes!) and also in my second favourite, opera (not sure when exactly). Both of these are freely available and if you haven't already, try them out. I especially like the thousands of extensions and themes available in firefox (I think this is also true for opera but I've never investigated that). Firefox is the ideal platform for young Ghanaian programmers to cut their teeth and practice their skills. It would be interesting to know if any Ghanaian programmers are aware and have contributed in any way to an extension.

As always, I'll mention my favourite word. I invite you to innovate your mind and sample the mac and/or linux world.

Does anybody in Ghanathink now how many members use *nix?

You mentioned an mtv service available only to american users. In accordance with this web site (generating ideas), this is what I would have done in your position:

"Readers, I've had a look at m$ vista and one new feature I like is the tv and film feature. I'm not suitably skilled myself, but are there any Ghanaian programmer's or film makers, who might want to exploit this new technology? Discuss"

With respect, in my opinion, your first post would be more appropriate for the various (frivilous?) forums within Ghanaweb. They all have their rightful place in this www thing, but personally, I considered your posting not suited to the mission of this web site (especially within physical sciences?!). No doubt you'll respond with words to the effect "who are you to tellme where to publish my posts, etc etc". (I wrote that to save you the trouble :) )

However, unlike yourself, I'm happy to accept criticisms without resorting to, well the type of text that we all can read for ourselves.

One final point about linux and mac viruses. Yes they do exist (even bluetooth viruses exist); however, my understanding is that the inherent user permissions (root access?) are an effective barrier to virus spread, unless of course you frequently gain internet access as root (highly dangerous!). After all, if use a noraml account for web access, you've introduced a layer of security. One advantage of open source is that when viruses are found the global base of programmers are available to find a solution; in contrast, m$ have to achieve a higher level of security with less resources.

Re:Its better

of course vista is better. every version of windows presents something new (and some old stuff). tab browsing came from firefox and bill gates himself admitted to some features being lifted from mac. there's nothing wrong with that. it's about doing what's best for the consumer to make their lives easier. while there are many exciting new features in vista, there are many turn-offs too. for instance if you plug in say your old device that isn't certified by microsoft, vista will degrade in performance, thus rendering whatever you're planning to do with the device useless. the idea is to make DRM work in practice and they're only doing this to please the recording and movie industry. so why is this bad? microsoft should not be dictating to you on what you can do with your computer and with media you've purchased. it doesn't make sense to buy a cd and then pay itunes to get the same music to your ipod. you should be able to take your CDs and convert them to MP3s but that's not allowed anymore if the recording industry get their way. vista makes it possible for them to do just that. vista will also disable a video or audio card or certain other kinds of hardware installed in your PC if it decides it does not have the appropriate level of content protection. this is just wrong but since the majority of computer users uses windows, microsoft can still push this and may be successful.
is vista worth the upgrade? certainly if you can afford it(price, freedom, etc) but for me i think windows xp is enough for what i need windows for.

i don't know the exact number but i'm a regular linux user - since 1999. at home i use linux and windows, but at work i use windows exclusively. there's a huge market for it, for a simple reason that not everyone cares about what runs on their PC as long as they can do what they wanna do. you also need to understand some characteristics of many computer users. not everyone needs to care what OS runs on their computer as long as it runs. a medical doctor/nurse doesn't necessarily need to know about linux or windows or mac. their problem space is totally different from you and i and they don't need to care. at the end of the day it's not about the OS but the services that it provides. this is how companies like redhat and novell are making money. just a different way of running a business and it's not any different from microsoft. i don't know what Omanba's background is or her interest but she can very well be one of the those users who don't need to care.

That is true but local exploit are still possible on linux and on many other operating systems so even if you run everything as a normal user you still need to becareful because a worm that exploit a hole to get root permission can still render your machine useless.

drm is bad news

I have read about drm; it surprises me that people such as omanba who focus on "what can I do with my computer" cease, or worse glorify, their ignorance of "how does my computer do that"! But what really annoys me are those IT personnel who should know better.

One example is internet radio and video. I've yet to encounter a Ghanaian radio stream encoded in ogg. Why on earth would joyfm (as a non confirmed example) stream asx via windoze server, when they could use a lower specification server with helix, or icecast and stream in ogg for reduced software and bandwidth costs? Likewise music albums; much as aac is the dominant codec I'd prefer the choice to buy in ogg.

And what about Ghanaian film and tv? No streaming in theora? I once read about someone's stance on buying music; stopped 10 years ago: "why should I pay for something that, according to the licence rights, I do not actually own". Food for thought, artists!

Seems that drm is great for those that want to deny freedom to the user. Having said that, no one forces someone to buy windoze...

One thing that annoys me about IT in Ghana is a complete ignorance of business opportunities by failure of thinking differently. Why do internet cafe's waste resources on using m$ when lamp technologies, with all the normal clients (firefox, vlc, gnome etc etc) can be deployed at lower cost (and hence higher profit)?

Why is m$ office so prevalent in Ghana, when OOo offers an immediate eradication in foreign currency costs?

In accordance with the mission of this web site, if you value your ability to think and act freely, steer clear of m$.

webmaster request to move topic

An open letter to the web master.

May I request that this topic is moved away from this section entitled physical sciences and engineering? I cannot see the relevance.

Personnaly, I'd transfer to the bin ;), but I suppose IT may be more appropriate. Where is the moderator?

i don't understand you - you condemn microsoft for their use of drm, yet you commend apple? apple is in the same drm business too with the itunes system. there's continuous debate on drm in the linux kernel so it's very possible drm will be available on linux too. it's not upto the os providers to dictate to service providers. microsoft is right to push drm. you as a consumer also have a choice to buy or not buy. attacking someone for their own personal decision isn't warranted.

this may very well be a business decision. either accept it and enjoy their service or write them a nice email explaining to them how they lost a customer. an example of this is africast.tv. when they started out, you only require a username and password to view their content. people abused this system (myself included) and it has smarten them up. they now employ a content protection system which prevents such abuses or at least makes it difficult. for someone trying to run a business, they must decide what's best for them. does the level of protection they require available easily on linux? do they have the expertise to deploy and maintain such a system? if the company has already deployed windows in some existing platform, they'll be more likely to deploy the streaming system on an existing platform instead of investing in another one. all these things along with a host of other reason influence peoples decision to deploy windows/linux/mac. as an outsider looking in, you have to consider these things first before you choose to criticize them.

And what about Ghanaian film and tv? No streaming in theora? I once read about someone's stance on buying music; stopped 10 years ago: "why should I pay for something that, according to the licence rights, I do not actually own". Food for thought, artists!

i agree and if you this is your stance then again you have a choice: don't buy and please don't pirate it either. for intellectual property, you can't really own it can you? the best you can do is buy a license to use it. you can argue whether the license agreement is fair or not but once you've agreed to the license you must respect what it says.

most of these software are pirated and it's bad for a legitimate business but microsoft doesn't care at the moment because it helps their bottom line. if people in ghana are choosing to deploy windows, it's probably because microsoft sale machine is doing its job right. you as a linux advocate have your job cut out for you. to achieve success you must understand the people and their business. be overly aggressive and you'll lose them in less than a second. push something that doesn't fit and people will start tunning you out. you must find the right balance to push linux when it's appropraite and leave it alone when it doesn't fit.

r

good points; a quick reply

My commendation of apple is strictly limited to their hardware design and software engineering. Their proprietary 'fairplay' licence has proven to be popular with mass consumers, but I don't personally agree, hence my personal decision not to use buy ipod, for example.

Yes, I've read about drm being considered for the linux kernel, personally I don't agree with that either; thankfully, the global linux community is big enough to cope with dissent. I could always venture off to another obscure OS of course...;)

I don't believe I have attacked someone for making their own choice and I'm quite prepared to acknowledge if inadvertently done so.

Intellectual property can be owned, as long as the originator forfeits the right of ownership. I think creative commons licence is a good example, under which both audio and literal works have been published, which I find an interesting development.

The issue of piracy is a long debate for a separate post; I may comment upon this separately...

I totally accept the broadcasters right to choose the most appropriate technology for their business. Sometimes I do bother to contact the web masters: the response is mixed. Some other alternative streams, some acknowledge their limitation due to a decision to concentrate on a single mass market, some don't care...

It's not for me to push linux; I'm happy just to let the unaware know.

Interesting about the scale of pirated software; I agree, I suspect that m$ allows this in the developing world, since it looks out open source. Contrast that with m$ (and others) behaviour in developed countries; any firm after an audit caught with un licenced software is in serious trouble!

I'm really not sure about people in Ghana "choosing to deploy" windoze. More a case of "I had no idea apache exists..."

OMANBA

Many Thanks

Thank you Thinfox for rising to the occasion. You couldn't have put things better. Its very sad when certain individuals are always intent on rocking the boat.
I only wanted to put this topic across so all could discuss it, but as it turns out i am being labelled as computer illetrate just because i talk about Windows...but its all good.

Regarding what i do; I am not here to brandish my credentials, so suffice it to say that i am just a common forum member and Windows user and i do know enough to be comfortable with my computer and beyond, so we will leave it at that.
For all my sins for bringing forth this topic it has turned out very interesting indeed.

be careful

looks to me that the topic was moved to IT; shouldn't tell lies, more honourable to put your hands up and say "sorry, wrong category by mistake" :)

OMANBA

Be careful of what?

So what is the big deal? I made a mistake and put it under the wrong category so you need to get up in arms about it huh? It was still under the IT forum wasn't it? So it can't be that bad. I guess you never make mistakes online.
But i suppose you advocating that my post was rubbish and should be binned was okay wasn't it? And i dont suppose it ever occured to you that it was a very insulting thing to say about somebody's topic. Let alone apologise for saying that?
Amazing how you always contradict yourself on here. I am not honourable, so go cool your big ego somewhere else and think about how you reacted to my topic from the scratch. If you are wise, you will undrstand that you went too far.
You seem to have a fixation on me mister and take delight in always crossing me on forum. its becoming very obvious now so check yourself.

For somebody who said web master (in your open letter to him) should bin my topic, and this is what you wrote on quote: ''personally i would transfer to the bin, but i suppose IT may be more appropriate. Where is the web master'' you really dug into it with your know how. (i am quoting this so you wont be able to edit)
Its people like you who give men a bad name, with your forceful, disrespectful do as i say attitude. This is very obvious in the way you write and your constant sarcastic inuendos. Dont spoil topics for the good people of this forum with your paaapaaa. Relax!
