THE STATE OF THE GHANAIAN MOVIE INDUSTRY

MORE OFTEN THAN NOT,GHANAIANS TEND TO EASILY FORGET THE GOOD THINGS PEOPLE LIKE FRED ADDAE, OSOFO DADZI, MAAME DOKONO, KOFI ABRANTEE, SUPER O.D. ,AWAAKYE, ADWOA SMART ,GREAT IDIKOKO,SUGAR DADDY and a whole lot to mention but few.
These men have an affluent hand in the state of our ghanaian movie industry as of now.Only a few of these men are no more in the field but yet Ghanaians have betrayed them..
I am not disputing the fact that Agya koo has contributed tremendiously in the redemption of the Ghanaian movie industry but the truth of the fact is that we should be thankful to his producers and film directors .
Now to amore serious note, lets always be considerate to the film in question. What are the revelance and what impact has it on our youth and the nation at large.
Agya koo is only noted for comic utterances with which most tend to be profane.
Ladies and gentlemen, i am not trying to make any sort of comparism but lets be factual with the MESSAGE the aforementioned Legends passed across in the course of their screenplay ,very EDUCATIVE.
VAN VICKER,JACQUILINE APPIAH and the rest of their group are epitoms of PROLIFIC CELEBRITIES and must be given the rightful recognition and support rather than those FIASCO MOVIES agya koo comes out with.
GHANA is 50 and must be mature enough in all its endeavours .
BOB SANTO is the caliph of Agya koo, i mean most of agya koo's moves were imitated from SANTO and JUDAS..
LETS BE RELISTIC

unfortunately, i don't think

unfortunately, i don't think ghanaian movie producers and actors have learn the craft enough to be making movies. it seems there aren't enough great story tellers and writers anymore because quite too often, the movies that comes out don't have much of a streamlined story line to them and tend to be all over the place. the video and audio engineers also disappoints every time. ironically, movies made during the early 90s were of much high quality than what they're putting out today.

I referred to the Ghanaian movie industry in a blog post here - http://ghanaconscious.ghanathink.org/node/360

All these people you mentioned gave us great memories when it comes to Osofo Dadzie, Akan Drama, Thursday theater, etc. You do realise that these were all for the silver screen and play or theater shows. The plays and theaters are seen to be much better than our movies and many believe that Ghana makes better sitcoms or plays than movies.
The resurgence of the movies these days with Agya Koo and all can be seen as Akan Drama or Keysoap Concert party on the big screen. The actors are the same ones in those plays. So technically, we are even making movies for the big screen with these new ones. Even though they are really funny and celebrate our local languages, the story-writing is complicated or up-to-par and the quality of the setting, video, sound, etc, is average.

The Venus Production crew - Beyonce, Princess Tyra, etc - seem to have the resources to make some really good productions. The problem with them is they haven't been able to capture the Ghanaian culture that the Agya Koo's are trying to perpetrate. I mean when you have a movie set in a village and name the main female character, Nadia or Melissa, you know there's a problem.
Thinfox mentioned that the movies we are making these days are worse than those of the 90's and I will agree. We may have Beyonce as Africa's most popular movie in awhile, but even that movie cannot stand up to many of the movies that are recognized at FESCAPO. We need to invest in NAFTI again (I don't hear anything about it these days) and find people who can really act. There are many actors and actresses coming through the drama clubs of various secondary schools, those are the people we must target - make use of their creativity to tell stories that Ghanaians across the board (whether they are stationed in Sydney, Amsterdam, Columbus -Ohio, Accra, Yendi or Tuabodom) can identify with and enjoy.

Someone mentioned on this forum, making a movie about Yaa Asantewaa. Can the people involved in the Ghanaian movie business/industry pull somthing like that of?

PS: Anyone know of people involved in the production of Ghanaian movies? I know a couple and would source their opinions.

the destiny of a nation at any given time depends on the opinions and contributions of its young men and women.

STORYLINES AND COST

STORYLINES AND COST CUTTING

I think the main issues are story lines, production and post production and film budgets.
If the script writers get us storylines that will hold us captive, that would be great but often times they dont run deep. Production and Post production of which editing comes in is also very wanting. Producers need to veer towards big screen quality type of Directing Cast members and editing and be more savvy at getting the subject matter right and move away from the Concert Party/Akan Drama mode of operations.

I also think film budgets are not that big; what with the shoddy state of picture and sound quality and how scenes are crammed into each other or cut out. Abocco mentions NAFTI, yes that Institution is still churning out graduates for film and television work and there is a Ghana Actors Guild which comprises of the the GhanaTheatre Societies, the TV drama groups and the Concert Party groups but what are they to do if some private production house is calling the shots and has no foresight nor intention to make use of available resources for various reasons.
We do have the Technology and the manpower,so something must be very wrong.

Any interest in setting up a

Any interest in setting up a fund to promote movies?

OMANBA

THERE ARE MORE PRESSING

THERE ARE MORE PRESSING NEEDS

Paa, i think there are more pressing needs in Ghana than entertainment. My money is on helping Institutions like Cancer, HIV, and Cardio-thoracic units in the hospitals, Accident and Emergency departments, displaced people, rehabilitation units for the elderly and mentally impaired and schools in the deprived areas. And even if we wanted to help the Ghana film Corporation, we can not sustain the funding. It will just be a flash in the Pan sort of thing; just a one off gesture.

And speaking of funding, how long is this forum going to rely on donations when we can initiate some sources of cash flow for our coffers.
Advertisements alone can keep the cash flow in here. Scripted adverts, banner adverts, announcements, obituaries, special events, sales and 'donkomis' are all things we can take advantage of.

Shed the still image of the top hierachy of this site from the welcome page. Feature banner adverts there instead; its the first page everybody sees when they log on. Lose a forum or two or add a special one and feature advertisements there. Charge less than other sites or give special rates and watch the money flow in. Anyone from airlines, musicians, business men and women and any Tom, Dick and Harry who has a connection with Ghana will take advantage of it. This is afterall a Ghanaian online community isn't it, and a special and serious one at that. There's already a payment system for donations abi? Well, use the same for charging for adverts.

But first of all the site needs a change in image. A bit more user friendliness will go a long way. Akuraseni suggested a system where we could see who was on-line, i suggested a chat room and other bits and others brought in ideas but we are still here. The one thing that goes against this site is the coldness and quiteness. No interaction is done here in real time and that is a participation killer and definitely not a crowd puller.
This is one project we can all help fund to cover initial software and admin costs, knowing that it has been money well invested because by so doing we can rest assured that we have helped the site on its way to financial independence and ease the pressure on the pockets of the top hierachy who i am sure make a lot of financial sacrifices to keep things rolling. Anyway just my little 5O cents.

THE CRINGE FACTOR! WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT GOD MADE THREE WORLDS AND THAT I COME FROM THE THIRD WORLD. THE ISSUE OF RACE IS GEOGRAPHICAL AND NOT A STATUS SYMBOL AND NEITHER IS MY SKIN BLACK NOR YOURS WHITE.

while i agree that there are

while i agree that there are more pressing needs, we can't always pass off the opportunity to create wealth and proceeds from such ventures can go to support the programs you've listed. we can't always ask people to donate to support this and that. we need to be able to sustain ourselves in the long run and funding good entertainment projects can go along way to generate the needed funds to pull behind other programs that addresses more important issues.
as for adverts, i don't think it's such a great idea to cover the site with advertisements. ads work better when you integrate them with content that people want but are not willing to pay for them. we don't offer anything other than a platform for discussion so bombarding them with ads is just gonna drive people away. personally, i don't like to see the same ad twice. the first time i see it, the source goes to my adblock list and firefox takes care of the rest. if the current model for supporting the site isn't sufficient, we can discuss it and maybe find other means of spicing things up but i don't think ads are the way to go.

r

Hospitals, social services

Hospitals, social services require taxes; as already mentioned, ghana needs businesses to create wealth (remember innovation?) so that increased tax revenue occurs. This is standard economics.

I agree, adverts for this type of web site are a waste of time. I also also use adblock and noscript extensions. The result? As soon as a website starts adding advertising, I amend my web browser accordingly. I regard the membership as technically adept; I doubt that banner advertising would be successful here.

There are plenty of other web sites offering real time communication. Whether real time communication will lead to increased activity remains to be seen. I notice a "who's new" box but see commentary from hardly any of them (nothing to write???). I think a chat room may only be needed for a particular project involving certain members. Organising a group chat is easy, as and when required. I doubt that a permanent chat room facility is needed, but if you are desperate (and know what to do), see below.

I'd like to see ghanaconscious become a bit of a "think-tank", perhaps generating various sources of income via published reports, raising the profile via press releases and continuing the commercialisation of the projects developed from initial ideas here (true intellectual property).

I see no reason for further "user friendliness". The portal has excellent speed performance.

Since I have moved off topic, may I suggest that a "comments" forum section is created and these latest postings copied there?

ghanaconscious@conference.jabber.org

OMANBA

Thinfox, i am suprised you

Thinfox, i am suprised you think having a section for adverts on here will drive people away. What did you think i meant by the banner adverts...POP UPS? A banner advert by say AN AIRLINE stays at the top of the page as i indicated. If you do not want to read it you dont click it, but somebody who could do with a flight or service offered clicks on to read further. If they pay for a week it stays for a week and then another advertiser takes over. The same can be used to bring forum projects to the attention of membership and visitors. On the ADVERTISEMENTS forum page, once again its a matter of choice. Those who want to read and take advantage click on it to go to that page or they dont. And i wont even go into details on what a cash cow advertising is in this age of the information highway.

But hey, perhaps you are right. This site is just a platform for discussions so my vision is too futuristic. We come here, we read a comment, we leave a comment and we vanish. Which makes me wonder how that level of activity and interaction can boost funding projects and sustain it. If we want to be Philantropists we better take a stand on that and be clear about it but if we want to indulge in money making schemes then i want to see people come out with money making ideas worth embracing and very realistic...and by that i dont mean donations. All this pooh-poohing about ADVERTISING because of our personal abhorrence and savvy software that can get rid of it is not very patriotic. Heck! any marketing person out there?

Anyway, back to the original topic. Paa Kwesi in what way is the proposed funding going to be utilised to help Ghanaian movies?
From what you wrote i presume you mean a ''help the film industry sort of fund'' (a collective donation of sorts by us to say GFI) or is it some sort of business venture? Can you please expand on it?

i'm not saying adverts are a

i'm not saying adverts are a bad idea. if you'd agree that people don't visits sites just for the ads, then you gotta ask why having a section just for adverts. suppose there's a section for writing reviews and one of them is on flights to ghana, then if someone is reading that review, there's a good chance that that person is looking for a flight to somewhere and so some recommendation on which flight to take in a form of ads is a good thing and it actually fits. we can't place ads just for the sake of it. you gotta do it in a smart way so it doesn't take anything away and people visiting your sight rarely notices it. certainly, we can place some banner ads in the header but why? what do we hope to achieve and is it going to materialized because we're banking on hopes instead of strategically deciding the best way to make money, if that's necessary.

NOT ENOUGH TO CONVINCE ME I

NOT ENOUGH TO CONVINCE ME

I see. Well your proposal sounds like 'ntaaboo ampesi' to me. Lets be realistic how many people on this forum do you think you can garner to chip in that so called £10 or dollar per head to cover the entire cost for production? It will end up with some members having to pay more in order to neaten the edges and fill the gaps. And what is the probability that the film wont be a flop (Let me guess, you intend to help with scripting and production too) and we are going to get our money's worth?

Listen, if you guys wont bite the advertising bait then lets get some money together(donations of course by those who want to respond to the Tsooboi) and buy shares in some lucrative entity. Disterics can go seek investment advice and bring a few options for the vote and i am not talking small time 'Cedi-Cedi Nsisa' more along the lines of Pound, Dollar and Euro rates. That way at least our initial capital would be safe and the site can operate on the profits and we can all rest assured that we have a safe nest egg waiting to hatch. What do you say?

THE CRINGE FACTOR! WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT GOD MADE THREE WORLDS AND THAT I COME FROM THE THIRD WORLD. THE ISSUE OF RACE IS GEOGRAPHICAL AND NOT A STATUS SYMBOL AND NEITHER IS MY SKIN BLACK NOR YOURS WHITE.

thinfox

i don't know but for

i don't know but for something like this you have to look at it as an investment opportunity and definitely not a donation. if you have enough funds, i can see how you can get good return on your investments. you certainly won't be throwing your money behind anyone who shows up with a camera but rather whomever can convince you of having a good product that'll sell.
no doubt, adverts is surely a good way to make money but as i said earlier we're not expecting people to come here just for the ads, there gotta be something that attracts them here in the first place and we can entice them with our ads once they're here, but not before.

r

Seemingly contradictory: why

Seemingly contradictory: why be concerned about the probability of a film being a flop, yet apparently unconcerned that shares in a "lucrative entity" may also flop? "Our initial capital would be safe". Errr, hello??? Recent dollar denominated fund depreciation ring any bells??! Nothing wrong with investment in shares as long as you understand the risk of value decline as well as increase.

Referring to the cinema funding, it is an idea for members of the public to contribute, not members (I guess you mean of this forum?). Like all ideas in a democracy, the masses have their own right to either accept or reject the proposal: nothing wrong with that.

Funding of the web site should be a separate forum topic in my opinion. Advertising will not attract members, but the content first! I can't see advertisers being attracted to the content of this website.

nice idea r, i like the film finance idea suggested previously
if many people believe making a great movie needs an injection of capital, i see small contributions as a feasible way to finance it.
besides it's like having shareholders and here you will be benefitting from their interest and the potential of them buying into marketing the movie, etc, doing all they can to make it succeed.

a format too would be nice

film finance proposal format

If possible:

Create a new specific forum topic

Send e-mail to all members announcing the existence of the forum topic and invite all members to post proposals, stating the time period that the forum topic is open to accept postings

Don't impose any rules, just let members type their proposals

Configure forum topic to allow only one submission by each member

Configure forum topic to allow postings only for the four week time period

After posting period has closed, allow 2 weeks for members to read all comments

Afterwards, allow simple majority voting for most popular proposals, during a 10 day period. Suggest the top two most popular proposals are accepted. Does drupal allow php bulletin board type voting radio buttons to choose proposals and view results?

Ghanaconscious to publish the two most popular film finance proposals to ghana film association or similar trade association, for film makers to consider.

I imagine there should be proposals published by April 2008?

looks doable, and april 2008 sounds like a good time to complete.

recent Ghanaian movies

Ghanaian movies are crawling their way to the top!

There are a lot of movie houses appearing.
Revele Films, makers of the Home Sweet Home series on Ghana Television, produced 'Run Baby Run' which has earned rave reviews. I think it has even won an international award. The film features some new faces but the old guards like Rama Brew, Kofi Bucknor, Monica Effah and Jackie Appiah are present. It was shot in multiple Ghanaian towns and in the UK too.
I watched it recently and loved it. It combines the good things that are in Beyonce - President's Daughter and the Agya Koo genre :-)

Another one to watch out for is Sparrow Productions' Life and Living it directed by Shirley Frimpong Manso.
It features seasoned actors like Brew Riverson Jnr, Adjetey Anang (Pusher), Rama Brew, Bibie Brew, as well as Chris Attoh, etc.

as a Ghanaian i know that we are great at telling stories and can be great actors. i am one of those who believe that Ghanaians have the ability to rise to heights that have never been imagined .we need to do what we do best and that is tell the stories and act accordingly to the the story that we're telling. We cant mimic Hollywood because we don't have the budget, we can t mimic Nigeria because that is their style, although entertaining, not really great movie making(no offense), look at Mexican movies(movies from south America), south Africa. the art is in telling the story beautifully.
Something the Ghanaian movie industry lost in the 90's., I TOLD YOU SO and the ROAD TO KUKURANTUMI's are to meet Ghanaian movie pinnacles.

Hello to every one here

I am new on this site and i have read alot u guys are saying about this site, Ghanaian movies, advertisements and raising fuds to help our film industry if am right. What i will like to suggest is that it good for this site to grow and advertising on the site is the best solution. I had my visa to the USA through student Visa and wanted to come and study good Film Making then return to better our film industry. I have a very big dream for our film industry and i want u guys to know that it is not raising funds to help the industry that will change things. Those producers are not educating people about what Film and Acting is about. We need to go back to the Class room and learn, any one who says u dont need education in Filming is a big liar. We need good story writers, good producers, good directors and good actresses and let me say all the crew members and what will make them good in this field is them going back to the class room and learn Film making. Here in the US people take coarses for even producing why cant we do the same. I think that any funds that u will raise should rather be put in this site and allow advertisers. I saw this site on google and i wanted to visit ur site to find what is there and its through advertising that help me to know a site like this exist.
