A new Think Tank

An idea crossed my mind today and I thought that it was so cuul that I couldn't wait to share it with all of you. Actually, it's been something that's been on my mind for sometime now but I hadn't found the correct platform for it yet.

The idea is very simple. We'll form a new think tank. Instead of just rambling our thoughts here on this site, we'll harness it and use it productively. By doing so, I mean we create incentives for people to think and come up with concrete ssolutions to solving real life problems, especially problems back home in Ghana. But how do we create the incentive??? It's simple. All we have to do is to look for people with the capital who are willing to take some calculated risks and then we sell our ideas to them. Ok, I agree it's not that simple in practical terms; but it doesn't mean it is not worth trying.

What I am proposing is that we create a new forum of some sort where serious ideas that are practical solutions to problems in Ghana and the world in general is discussed. What happens is that there's got to be some law that whoever presents the idea first is entitled to the rights to that idea. Some sort of patent. Then the rest of us workshop the idea (maybe for free) just because we love the think, analyze and punch holes in theories. This critical assesment should be done so thoroughly that the risk of taking on such a venture is highly minimised. Come on, we have people here who have been and are still in some of the best schools in the world. What shows that we cannot do that.

After the idea has been thoroughly brainstormed, a committee sells the idea. This can be done in two ways. First, we just sell the outright, make our money, smile all the way to the bank and live happily ever after. The second approach is that we look for a Ghanaian here (or anyone for that matter) who has some money and is willing to make an investment, defend the proposal to him, and then look for competent people in Ghana to do the actual work. At the end of the day, the investor gets his money's worth, we get our commission, people get employed in Ghana, dollars gets to Ghana, resume is boosted, etc. The most important thing is that everyone is happy.

The modalities for this project can be worked out later if other members are interested. But a few suggestions could start the discussion. For example, other members who contribute to the workshop will do so voluntarily. If there is a big hit afterwards, there can be an agreement to share the bounty. However, it should generally be agreed that a commission of the profit will come to the group to undertake projects (not for profit though). That way, Ghanathink is strenghtened to do more than just talk and we'll be in a better position to help those at home. The most important thing once again is that everyone walks home happy.

Let me know what you think about this project.

sounds good

.. except, I think thats the whole point of GhanaThink.
The various divisions of Ghanathink breaks down as follows

GhanaConscious - we generate and discuss the ideas here.
tsooboi - generate funding and resources to implement the project.
homefront - implement the project on the ground in Ghana/Africa.

Re: sounds good

Nice idea. Noble thoughts. But there are a few questions which are not answered. What happens if people bring up wonderful ideas and somebody else not in the group "takes" the idea and uses it to make himself/herself fabulously rich. What does the person who thought of the idea get???

Then how do we propose to raise funds apart from asking our members to contribute every once in a while to support a project?? And how do we implement these plans if the funds are not forth coming?? Would it not be nice to have an incentive to think, where everyone in the society at large benefits??

These are mere questions and suggestions... I understand that Ghanathink is not for profit and is a society of free thinkers who want to help our motherland and society as a whole. But I thought we could just give these points some thoughts.
