A few techie notes for the IT hobbyist

Posted by r on Wed, 04/02/2008 - 09:26

My usual web browser of choice is opera; anyway I used firefox again recently and was pleasantly surprised when I encountered an extension called flagfox. This identifies the country of origin of web sites that are visited. So, for example, this web site is based in america (where of course it should be in ghana, but we know why that is not the case ,yet ;) ). For some reason this extension prompted me to think I'd share briefly the types of software I like to use, so here goes...

mandriva
gnome
jedit (text editor)
xxe (xml editor)
writer
calc
gnumeric (slowly replacing calc when possible)
(la)tex
gnuplot
realplayer (I know, but blame the bbc!)

Regarding the use of real player, my biggest complaint with ghanaian media companies is their almost total deployment of m$ media player! Oh, and of course:

opera
firefox

Next time I may decide to share my favourite web sites...

broswers, media plyers, etc

Firefox is my broswer of choice.

Opera is very popular in Ghana but Internet Explorer is by far the most used. A lot of people in Ghana have never evn heard of Firefox.
Firefox runs on a lot of memory so the developers have to try and reduce the amount of memory it takes to run the program for it to succeed in Ghana

I am not a big linux person but I can say the vlc player is gaining popularity in Ghana too
Which reminds me - does anyone know of any Ghanaian softwares - browsers, media players, that have gained a good market share anywhere at all?

the destiny of a nation at any given time depends on the opinions and contributions of its young men and women.

Favourite bookmarks

As promised, a selection of (via rss) hyperlinks to share. If the web site closes, you could export the opml file and use another service such as feedshow.

Whole lot of linux users...

I'm suprised but there are a whole lot of Linux users in Ghana! I couldn't even imagine someone using anything apart from Windows. I guess its mainly due to the fact that most Ghanaians own slow machines and are experimental with stuff.

time to open your eyes

There is a linux accra users' group; search yahoo groups directory.

"I guess its mainly due to the fact that most Ghanaians own slow machines and are experimental with stuff."

No! Linux will run quicker on any old pc compared to the redmond devil. Most likely reason is ghanaians use of pirate software...

In answer to your shout box question, see my web log or this previous post

Poor site

Yeah, I did a search and found the Accra Linux Users Group. But the site is very poor. I'm sure it hasn't been updated since 2007.

I think the Linux community isn't that strong. I'd definately like to see more custom made software designed for Linux operating systems.

Homework required

I was referring to the mailing list (which is admittedly sparse). Since you don't know anything about linux software, a few web sites for you to review: sourceforge; freshmeat; gnu; gnomefiles; tigris; tldp. Not to mention the numerous irc channels. I wonder if you've actually done anything with ubuntu other than install (which isn't even difficult...).
