WHO DO YOU BELIEVE

Posted by OMANBA on Tue, 12/30/2008 - 10:04

The 2008 elections has brought about the worst in humankind in Ghana. Everything is based on rumours, speculations and down right lies and negative propaganda. The information flying about is so collosal it will send your head reeling. I have followed many an article on websites across the spectrum and unsubstantiated declarations of all sorts and the conclusion i have drawn is that it is Ghanaians doing what they do best...vying for a bit of notoriety and everybody wanting to shout the loudest.
In the past few weeks a culture of blame, scape goating and insults of a very acrid nature is what is flowing across the landscape. Its like a battle ground flowing with poisonous spears of discord aimed at the consciences of people.

Some politicians and their cohorts only know the language of challenging everything that comes from the opposing camp and their propaganda machinery has been in overdrive for days as they throw constituents into total confusion and chaos. Certain sectors of the press who should know better are out there fanning the flames of discord in a bid to raise their listening ratings and sell a few more copies of their printed issues and as a result common sense and the truth have simply flown out of editorial board rooms. That people will stoop so low in order to gain something at the expense of the masses says it all.

The easily led, the politically blind, the morally deaf, dumb and gullible and sometimes downright stupid members of the public who cannot think for themselves are faring no better. Like cattle being led to the slaughter they flow with every rumour that comes on line, on air or in the papers and work themelves up into a right froth. A whole array of know it alls; often spewing forth nonsensical theories have been let loose on web sites and newspapers and they are just turning the heads of people and sowing the seeds of discord.
Whatever happened to letting the votes do the talking. Because at the end of the day it is the ballot that will decide how people feel and what or who they really want.
Besides it is not a one party state and people have a right to support whoever they want to without being pressurised with negativity and scandalous innuendos.
If the same level and gusto with which the rumour mill is turning has been used to educate the masses about our constitution and other civic affairs, chances are we might have a population that really understands the responsibility they share in engaging in democracy but of course people are not interested in that because it serves their irresponsible and greedy purposes better to have an atmosphere of insecuirity.

The question i want to ask fellow Ghanaians is who amongst us by dint of our shouting, lying and madness is going to gain any positive effect on our motherland? Is it going to put bread on the table tomorrow, pay our bills and sky rocket the economy overnight? Have we forgotten that it is these same sort of atrocious propaganda that has thrown many an African state into a downward spiral and that if we are not careful then by our own devious utterances and negative propaganda it wont bode well for Ghana either. Even as i write i sense the final results will be a bone of contention because as far back as yesterday, long before the final constituents have been declared, the propagandarist machinery of many were in action giving people results they didn't have access to.
And as a result i see the next few days result in more madness as people fall over themselves once again to see who shouts the loudest and who has the best conspiracy theory. Its a right shame the way we have carried on during these elections.

blame the system

30-12-08: valid points, but show me a similar plural voting system that hasn't promoted such negativity?
